We all know Jennifer Grey can dance - that is if we watched Dirty Dancing - so this is really no surprise. It is an electric performance I think... what do you think?

Argentine Tango is more than dance, it is more than the music… it is a culture. It has a rich history and it takes a lifetime just to scratch the surface of the great musicians and dancers that gave it the credibility to be named by Unesco as part of the world's cultural heritage in 2009. So why would you want to water it down? Why would you want to dance the movements of tango to pop music, or classical music? Why do some people think they can 'improve' on tango by dancing a form of the dance to Mozart, or folk singers, and say they are dancing tango. Don't get me wrong I have no objection to people dancing to Monty Python, George MIchael, Bruce Springsteen or Beethoven - on the contrary I think it is great…but I am at a loss to understand why they would call it 'tango'…. or tango fusion or anything else with tango as the adjective or noun. The tango music that was created at the height of the great composers, musicians and orchestras from Gerardo Matos Rodri
Many years ago a clever IT person thought up the Sydneytango calendar, a place where people could find classes, milongas, special events and a forum to talk about issues. This was before Facebook and it became the goto for most Sydney tango dancers, and the place where out of towners could find out what was happening on the scene in the Sydney metropolitan area. This calendar has been kept up to date assiduously until now - almost single-handedly by one dedicated tanguera, Sima Oertli. Sima has dedicated herself to keeping dancers informed about tango in Sydney and to organising and presenting events from Festivals to workshops with some of the world's very best tango dancers. She has presented milongas on a regular basis featuring live tango music, the only organiser who does so on a regular basis in the Sydney metropolitan area. In so doing she has introduced tango ORQUESTA LA LUNA dancers to world class musicians both locally and internationally and enriched the tan
Javier Rodriguez noticed it... so did Jorge Dispari, Ney Melo, Sergio Cortazzo... and numerous other visiting teachers to Sydney - our floorcraft is generally Bad. And last night was no exception. Why? Good floorcraft is basically good manners and following a few simple rules about proceeding in line of dance. Sydney is sometimes described as brash - we are not known for our good manners. My daughter who has recently returned from living in the USA remarked recently that manners on Sydney's roads were worse than those she had experienced in nearly 3 years of driving in LA! Last night's milonga had a busy floor for Sydney, the music was excellent - as always at this milonga - and dancers from beginners to those who had been dancing for 10 or more years was there. Sadly it was a handful of the more experienced dancers who were causing many of the problems. You can't blame beginners for stopping as they work their way through the steps they are bravely trying to master. A good
